Humans and chimpanzees are close relatives. They belong to a group called Hominini.

This group includes the genus Homo, which are humans. It also includes the genus Pan. This genus has chimpanzees and bonobos. Some scientists group gorillas in this tribe. Other scientists keep gorillas in their own group.

Scientists use DNA to study these links. Most DNA studies show that humans and chimps are 99% the same. This means we share most of our genetic code.

Long ago, these groups split apart. This split was not a quick event. It was a complex way of changing over time. This happened between 13 million and 4 million years ago.

We also find fossils to learn about the past. Some fossils are very old. For example, Orrorin lived about 6.2 million years ago. Scientists study these old bones to see how we changed. They look for ancestors. These are the old relatives that led to humans. Many species lived in the past, like the Australopithecines. They are very close to the human line.
