Their goal was to create home-improvement superstores. They wanted these stores to be larger than any competitors. Ken Langone was an investment banker. He helped Marcus and Blank secure the capital needed to start. The first two stores opened on June 22, 1979. They were located in the metro Atlanta area. These stores used spaces leased from J. C. Penney. These spaces were originally Treasure Island hypermarkets.

Home Depot has experienced many stages of growth and change. On September 22, 1981, the company went public on the NASDAQ. This move raised $4.093 million. In 1984, the company joined the New York Stock Exchange. By that year, they had 19 stores and over $256 million in sales. However, rapid expansion in the mid-1980s caused financial trouble. Earnings fell by 42% and debt rose to $200 million. To fix this, they opened only 10 stores in 1986. They also offered 2.99 million shares at $17 per share to restructure debt. By 1989, they became the largest home improvement retailer in the U.S.

They also launched Home Depot Landscape Supply in 2002. This division lasted five years before closing in 2007. In 2006, they bought Hughes Supply for $3.2 billion. This was the largest home construction wholesaler in the U.S. This division became known as HD Supply.

Leadership changes have also shaped the company. Robert Nardelli served as CEO and president starting in 2000. He left in 2007 following complaints about management and pay. His successor was Frank Blake. Blake used a different approach based on consensus. In 2014, Craig Menear became the new CEO. He had many previous roles at the company. He served as president of U.S. Retail before taking the top job. In 2022, Ted Decker became the CEO and president.
