Two different countries share the island today. Haiti is on the west side. The Dominican Republic is on the east side.

Long ago, native peoples lived there. The Taíno were a large group. They lived in small kingdoms. Each kingdom had a leader called a cacique. They grew food in mounds of leaves. They also caught fish and hunted small animals. They often slept in hammocks.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived. He called the island Española. Later, people used the name Hispaniola. This name means "little Spain."

Over many years, Spain and France both ruled parts of the island. Eventually, the two sides became separate nations. Today, the island is a busy place with many people. It is a very important part of the Caribbean.
