The Hirnantian glaciation was a time of deep freeze on Earth. It happened during a period called the Late Ordovician. This event is also known as the Andean-Saharan glaciation. Scientists call it an icehouse because the climate was much colder than usual. This ice age was very important for the history of our planet. It was a time of great change for the world.

This cooling happened in several steps. First, the temperature in tropical oceans dropped by about 5 degrees Celsius. This drop helped the ice begin to grow. As the ice sheets grew, they reached huge sizes. Some estimates say the ice was 50 to 250 million cubic kilometres. This growth caused the sea levels to fall by 100 meters. The cooling was very sudden and extreme. This process changed how the whole planet worked.

Researchers have studied this event for a long time. They look at rocks and chemical clues to understand it. They found evidence of this ice in many places. These places include Arabia, North Africa, and South Africa. You can also find evidence in Brazil, Peru, and Chile. Scientists also see clues in Wyoming in the United States. These clues help us map out the ancient ice sheets.

There are many facts about this period. The glaciation lasted between 35 million years and less than 1 million years. It is linked to a major mass extinction. During this time, nearly 61% of all marine life died out. This was the only time a major ice age matched such a large extinction. The ice sheets covered parts of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The center of the ice even moved from Africa toward South America.

We can compare this to things we know today. The cooling was much more extreme than the Last Glacial Maximum. That was the last big ice age humans lived through. Scientists think several things might have caused the cooling. One idea is that a gas called CO2 dropped in the air. Another idea is that a gamma-ray burst from space happened. It might even have been caused by dust from a meteor event. These ideas help us see how much the Earth can change.
