Some of Maxim's ideas are still around today. The Captive Flying Machine ride is still running in Blackpool, England. It is the oldest operating amusement ride in Europe. Engineers from Disney even visited Blackpool to look at it. They used what they saw to help design the Golden Zephyr ride. Maxim lived to be 76 years old. He died on November 24, 1916, after years of working with loud machines. His many inventions changed how people lived and worked.

This was the Equitable Life Building located at 120 Broadway in Manhattan. In 1878, he cofounded the United States Electric Lighting Company. He worked with Edward Weston to bring these designs to the public. However, Maxim faced long patent disputes with Thomas Edison. Maxim claimed he was the true inventor of the incandescent bulb. He believed Edison used better patent law knowledge to take credit for the work.
In addition to weapons and lights, Maxim studied flight. He began sketching plans for a helicopter as early as 1872. In 1889, he started building a large aircraft with wings. This machine weighed 3.5 tons and used two naptha-fired steam engines. The engines drove two propellers made of laminated pine. 
To fund his flight research, Maxim created an amusement ride. He designed the "Captive Flying Machine" for the 1904 Earl's Court exhibition. The ride used a large spinning frame with hanging cars. As it spun, the cars swung outward to simulate the feeling of flight. 
Maxim's life was marked by both great success and personal struggle. He moved to the United Kingdom when he was 41 years old. He became a naturalized British citizen in 1899 and received a knighthood in 1901. Years of working with loud machinery eventually caused him to become profoundly deaf. He died on November 24, 1916.
