Hipponax was a famous Greek poet from long ago.

Hipponax of Ephesus
Hipponax of Ephesus

He lived in cities like Ephesus and Clazomenae. He was known for his sharp and biting wit. He wrote poems to tease and mock others.

His poems often focused on the messy parts of life. He wrote about being poor and having many fights. He even used a special rhythm called choliambs. This style has a bumpy, halting beat. It helped his work feel silly and funny. Some people call him the inventor of parody. Parody is a way to mock serious things by making them look silly.

Hipponax had many rivals. He once had a big fight with artists named Bupalus and Athenis. He wrote poems to attack them. One story says he wrote poems after they made mean drawings of him. He also used many words from the Lydian language. This made his writing sound unique.

Some of his work was very beautiful too. One fragment is described as clear and sweet. Even though much of his work is lost, he changed how poets wrote. He showed that poetry could be about everyday people.
