This period lasted from approximately 1000 to 1300. It followed the Early Middle Ages and preceded the Late Middle Ages. This era was defined by massive social and political shifts. A rapidly increasing population changed the entire continent. This growth fueled a robust economy for centuries. In some areas, economic levels did not return to these heights until the 19th century. However, this growth eventually faltered during the 14th-century crisis. This crisis included the Black Death and various regional wars.

Population growth triggered significant changes in how people used the land.
