These ways of speaking come from high lands. They are spoken in hills and mountains. This includes parts of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. People also speak them in Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. You can even find them in parts of France and Italy.

The name "high" describes the land where they began. This is different from Low German. Low German is spoken on flat land near the sea. High German changed in a special way. We call this the High German consonant shift. This change makes the words sound different. For example, the word for pan becomes "Pfanne." In some areas, the word for sack changes too.

These ways of speaking have a long history. Old High German began around 500 AD. Later, some styles became popular for poetry. These old ways helped make the Standard German used today. Some people speak these ways in far places too. You might hear them in Canada or the United States. They are also spoken in Brazil and Mexico.
