Hiccup

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A hiccup is a little jump in your chest. It happens when a muscle moves on its own. This muscle helps you breathe.

When you hiccup, your throat closes fast. This makes a "hic" sound. It can happen one time or many times.

People of all ages get hiccups. Even tiny babies get them before they are born. They happen less as you get older.

Many animals get them too. Cats, dogs, and even horses can hiccup. Most of the time, they go away quickly.

You can wait for them to stop. Some people try drinking water to help. They usually go away on their own.
