It was written and produced by the group's member, André 3000. The song was released on August 25, 2003. It came from their fifth album called Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. People all over the world loved this song. It reached number one in the United States and Australia. It also hit the top in Canada, Norway, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. Many critics call it one of the greatest songs of the 2000s.

Making the song took a lot of hard work and many tries. André 3000 began working on the recording in December 2002 at Stankonia Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. He used an acoustic guitar to play the music. He was inspired by different bands like the Ramones and the Smiths. He recorded many versions of the vocals and the first verse. Later, he worked with a musician named Kevin Kendricks. Kendricks played the bassline on a synthesizer, which is a machine that makes electronic sounds. André also worked at Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles. He and Pete Novak experimented with sound effects like using a vocoder to change his voice. They did up to 40 takes for every single line.

The song has a very specific way it is built. It is written in a musical key called G major. The music moves at a fast tempo of 159 beats per minute. The song starts with three quick beats where André counts "one, two, three, oh." The lyrics are actually quite deep and serious. They talk about a person having doubts in a romantic relationship. The singer wonders if people stay together just because of tradition. He believes it is more important to be happy than to meet what the world expects. This makes the song a celebration of how people relate to each other.

There are many fun parts in the song to listen for. The chorus has the line "Hey ya!" repeated eight times. There is also a section where André asks, "What's cooler than being cool?" A group of voices responds with "Ice cold." This was a joke about one of his stage names. He also calls to the "ladies," and a woman named Rabeka Tuinei provides the response. One very famous line is "shake it like a Polaroid picture." This refers to how people used to shake instant photos to help them dry. He also mentions the singer Beyoncé and actress Lucy Liu in the lyrics.

The song has won many big prizes over the years. It won Best Urban/Alternative Performance at the Grammy Awards. It also won Favorite Song at the Kids' Choice Awards. In 2003, it was the number one song on many music lists. It was even the first song on Apple's iTunes to reach one million downloads. The song is still talked about today in many ways. It was ranked number 10 on a list of the 500 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone. It even inspired a special move in the comic series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
