Hermosillo is a major urban center in northwestern Mexico. It serves as the capital city of the state of Sonora.
The climate in Hermosillo is classified as a subtropical hot desert climate, known as BWh. This means the environment is typically very dry. During the summer months, temperatures can reach extremely high levels. Because of this heat, Hermosillo is recognized as one of the hottest cities in Mexico. The landscape is shaped by this arid weather. The surrounding area is largely desert land.
The city's economy has changed significantly over the decades. Since the 1980s, the manufacturing sector has focused heavily on automobile production. A major influence on this growth was the construction of a Ford Motor Company plant. This industrialization helped drive the population increase. Today, Hermosillo is one of the richest cities in Mexico based on GDP per capita. In 2016, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness ranked it as the seventh most competitive city in the country. This ranking was based on its economic diversification and access to education.
Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. Evidence from the San Dieguito Complex in the El Pinacate Zone suggests habitation 3,000 years ago. Agriculture was practiced in the area 2,500 years ago. During the pre-Hispanic era, the land was home to the Seri, Tepoca, and Pima peoples. In the mid-16th century, Spanish explorers arrived searching for gold. Jesuit missionaries followed them to the state of Sonora around 1614. Eusebio Francisco Kino arrived later, in 1687, to found a mission in nearby Cucurpe.
The foundations of the modern city began in the 1700s. Three small Spanish villages were established on the outskirts of what is now Hermosillo. These were Nuestra Señora del Pópulo, Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, and la Santísima Trinidad del Pitic. These settlements were intended to manage the indigenous populations and protect Spanish expansion. In 1726, the Presidio of Pitic was built as a fort. This was done to manage the presence of the Seri people. By the end of the 18th century, the area became known as Villa del Pitic.
Political shifts brought many name changes to the settlement. In 1825, the village of Pitic became the seat of its namesake department. In 1828, the name was changed to Hermosillo. This change honored the insurgent leader José María González de Hermosillo. The city's importance grew when the capital of Sonora moved from Arizpe to Hermosillo in 1879. The completion of the railroad in 1881 further expanded the economy. This rail line connected Hermosillo with Guaymas and Nogales. It allowed for the transport of mining and modern agricultural equipment.
The city played a vital role during the Mexican Revolution. After the assassination of Francisco I. Madero in 1913, Venustiano Carranza sought refuge here. Carranza used the city to begin the Constitutionalist Movement. This historical role earned Hermosillo the nickname "the revolutionary capital of the country." Another significant period involved Chinese immigrants. From the late 19th century until 1920, many Chinese laborers settled in the city. They established successful businesses in clothing and shoe manufacturing. However, anti-Chinese sentiment in the 1920s caused many to leave for the United States or Mexico City.
Modern Hermosillo is a center of infrastructure and culture. The city features various landmarks, such as the Catedral de la Asunción.
