Located in Saint Petersburg, Russia, it maintains the largest collection of paintings in the world. The museum serves as a massive repository for human history, holding over three million items in its total collections. This vast number includes a numismatic collection, which consists of coins, that accounts for approximately one-third of all items. While the collection is enormous, only a small portion of these objects is on permanent display at any given time. The museum functions as a federal state property and remains a vital center for international scholarship and tourism.

The museum operates as a large complex of six historic buildings situated along the Palace Embankment.

The primary structure is the Winter Palace, which served as the former residence of the Russian emperors. Other essential buildings within the complex include the Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, the New Hermitage, and the Hermitage Theatre. The museum's footprint has expanded to include the Menshikov Palace and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building. Visitors typically enter the Winter Palace through the Courtyard to access individual exhibits. The museum follows a specific schedule, remaining closed on Mondays but offering free admission to students and children daily.

The term "Hermitage" derives from the word for a hermit, a person who lives in isolation from society.

Originally, the name referred to the private apartments within the Winter Palace. These spaces were intended to be a refuge for the Russian Tsars from the heavy obligations of court life. In these rooms, the sovereigns could retreat to spend time with an intimate circle of personal friends. This private nature explains why the museum began as the personal collection of the Russian Imperial family. Today, the museum has grown far beyond these original private quarters.

The museum's history began in 1764 under the leadership of Empress Catherine the Great.

She established the collection by acquiring a group of paintings from a Berlin merchant named Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. Gotzkowsky had originally assembled these works for Frederick II of Prussia, but the purchase was not completed after the Seven Year's War. The resulting acquisition included between 225 and 317 paintings from Western Europe. These early works featured masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck. Since July 1992, Mikhail Piotrovsky has served as the director of the institution.

Visitors can explore diverse collections organized by era and geography.

The Egyptian collection has occupied a large hall in the eastern Winter Palace since 1940. Classical antiquities, including Greek pottery and Roman marble sculptures, occupy much of the ground floor of the Old and New Hermitage. One notable feature is the Room of the Great Vase, which houses a massive Kolyvan Vase made of jasper. The museum also features a prehistoric collection containing artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. This includes the world's oldest surviving knotted-pile carpet from the Altai region.

It bridges the gap between ancient civilizations and the modern world. The museum's scale is reflected in its visitor numbers; in 2022, it recorded 2,812,913 visitors. This high level of engagement places it 10th on The Art Newspaper's list of most visited art museums. By preserving everything from Scythian gold jewelry to 20th-century Fauvist paintings, the museum provides a continuous timeline of human creativity. It remains a central pillar of global cultural heritage.
