Writing was a big part of his life, but he learned a lot from being at sea. During World War II, Wouk joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1942. He served as an officer on two ships called destroyer minesweepers. These ships were named the *Southard* and the *Zane*. While he was serving in the Pacific, he saw many different battles. He participated in about six invasions during the war. Wouk said these experiences taught him how people behave when they are under pressure. He even started writing his first novel, *Aurora Dawn*, while he was off duty on a ship.

His early life helped shape the man he became. Wouk was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1915. His parents, Esther and Abraham Isaac Wouk, were immigrants from what is now Belarus. His father worked very hard to help the family move out of poverty. When Wouk was thirteen, his grandfather, a Rabbi named Mendel Leib Levine, came to live with them. His grandfather helped teach him about Judaism. Even though Wouk sometimes found his studies difficult, he eventually took his father's advice to study the Talmud. This religious education became a very important part of his life and his writing.

As a writer, Wouk was known for doing a huge amount of research. He spent thirteen years researching and writing his famous novels, *The Winds of War* and *War and Remembrance*. These books told stories about World War II through different viewpoints. He traveled and talked to many experts to make sure his history was correct.

Wouk lived a very long and busy life. He was 103 years old when he passed away in 2019. He loved his wife, Sarah, very much and said his real life began when they married in 1945. Wouk was also a very organized person who kept a personal diary. He wrote in these journals every day starting in 1937. He kept more than 100 volumes of these journals! Eventually, he gave them to the Library of Congress. This shows how much he cared about remembering the truth and the facts of life.
