These traits can be things like eye color or ear shape. The study of heredity is called genetics.

Inside your cells, there is a molecule called DNA. DNA holds the instructions for life. You can think of DNA like a long string of letters. These letters spell out a code. A small part of this code is called a gene.

Genes act like single instructions for your body.

These genes are found on long structures called chromosomes. Different versions of a gene are called alleles. Sometimes, the code changes. These changes are called mutations. A mutation can change a trait.

Your genes make up your genotype. This is the set of instructions you carry. Your phenotype is the set of traits you can actually see.

Your phenotype comes from your genes and your world. For example, sunlight can tan your skin. But a tan is not part of your genotype. You will not pass a tan to your children.
