The region has a deep history of continuous human habitation. People have lived in this area since at least 7000 BCE. This makes it one of the oldest inhabited regions in Europe. A major part of this history is the Minoan civilization. The Knossos Palace was a central site for these people. It dates back to approximately 2000 to 1350 BCE. The palace is located in the southern periphery of the modern city. It is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. In terms of visitor numbers, it is second only to the Parthenon.
The name Heraklion has an interesting origin. It comes from the ancient port of Heracleium. This port served as the harbor for the city of Knossos. The name honors the hero Heracles, also known as Hercules. In ancient times, the port sat about 3.7 kilometers from Knossos. As Knossos declined, the port area grew into a major urban center. The modern name was revived in the 19th century. Local people were using the name Heraklion as early as 1867.
Many different groups have controlled the city through the centuries. In 824 CE, Arab exiles from al-Andalus conquered Crete. They moved the capital from Gortyna to a new castle. They called this place rabḍ al-ḫandaq, meaning "Castle of the Moat." This name was later Hellenized to Chandax. In 961, Byzantine forces led by Nikephoros Phokas captured the city. The city was looted and burned during this siege. For the next 243 years, the town remained under Byzantine control.
In 1204, the Republic of Venice purchased the city. They renamed the area Candia. The Venetians built massive fortifications to protect the city. These included a giant wall and seven bastions. The city became the seat of the Duke of Candia. This era sparked the Cretan Renaissance in arts and letters. However, the Ottoman Empire eventually arrived for a long conflict. The Ottoman siege lasted 21 years from 1648 to 1669. This was the longest siege in history at that time. The city finally fell to the Ottoman army in 1669.
The modern era brought both destruction and growth. An earthquake in 1856 hit the northern coast of Crete. This disaster destroyed most of the city's 3,600 homes. Only 18 homes remained intact after the event. The earthquake also claimed 538 victims. Later, the city was part of the British zone. In 1913, Heraklion was incorporated into the Kingdom of Greece. The city suffered severe damage during the German invasion in 1941. It remained under German rule until 1945.
Today, Heraklion is a major center for global tourism. In 2017, it was Europe's fastest growing tourism destination. International arrivals grew by 11.2% that year. The region saw 3.2 million visitors in 2017. By 2018, the number of visitors rose to 3.4 million. The city features many architectural monuments from different eras. You can see the Koules Fortress near the port.
