Henry John Kaiser was a prominent American industrialist.

He was a leader in construction, shipbuilding, and healthcare. His career spanned many different industries. He helped build massive infrastructure projects like dams. He also revolutionized how ships were manufactured during wartime. Later, he became a major figure in modern medical systems. Kaiser's diverse business interests left a lasting impact on American life.

Kaiser's early life began in Sprout Brook, New York.

He was born on May 9, 1882. His parents, Franz and Anna Marie, were German immigrants. Kaiser started his career with humble beginnings. His first job was as a cash boy in a department store. By age 20, he was running a photography studio in Lake Placid. He later moved to Spokane to work in hardware sales. In 1906, he founded his own construction company.

This firm focused on fulfilling various government contracts.

His construction business grew through massive, complex projects. In 1914, he founded a paving company. This firm was one of the first to use heavy machinery. In 1927, his company received an $18-million contract in Cuba. By 1931, his firm was a prime contractor for the Hoover Dam. He also worked on the Bonneville and Grand Coulee Dams. These projects required managing huge amounts of labor and materials. Such large-scale engineering helped establish his reputation as a builder.

During World War II, Kaiser transformed shipbuilding through mass production.

He moved away from traditional riveting methods. Instead, his teams used welding to join metal parts. Welding was easier to teach to unskilled laborers and women. He also implemented a system of sub-assemblies. This meant different parts of the ship were built separately. These parts were then joined together for final assembly. This method allowed for much faster construction times.

Kaiser's shipyards achieved incredible speed and efficiency. He built Liberty ships, which were large cargo vessels. He also produced larger, faster Victory ships later in the war. One team famously built a ship in only four days. This occurred at the Richmond Shipyard in California. The 10,500-ton vessel was launched on November 12, 1942. This broke the previous ten-day record. His shipyards also produced over 100 escort carriers for naval use. These production concepts are still used in modern shipbuilding.

However, the new welding techniques faced some technical challenges. Some Liberty ships experienced what is called brittle fracture. This occurred when the welded hulls would crack in cold seas. The cracks could sometimes split a ship completely in two. A researcher named Constance Tipper helped discover why this happened. In 1947, Kaiser implemented more rigid welding controls. He also made minor changes to the ship designs. These improvements prevented further losses from hull fractures until 1955.

Kaiser also pioneered a new way to provide medical care.

He implemented a prepaid hospital financing plan for his workers. This was based on an idea from Sidney Garfield. The Richmond Field Hospital opened on August 10, 1942. It began as a simple, single-story wooden structure. It started with only 10 beds for shipyard workers. By 1944, the capacity had grown to 160 beds. By that time, 92.2% of Richmond shipyard employees had joined the plan. This became the first large-scale voluntary group medical plan in the country.

In his later years, Kaiser expanded into the automobile industry. In 1945, he partnered with Joseph Frazer. They formed the Kaiser-Frazer automobile company.

He also purchased Willys-Overland, which produced Jeep vehicles. Kaiser's business interests even reached into real estate and television. He developed large office towers like the Kaiser Center in Oakland.
