Henry Cavendish was a famous English scientist. He lived from 1731 to 1810. He was a very shy man. He often kept his ideas to himself. Many people did not know his work until long after he died.

Cavendish studied gases. He found a gas that catches fire very easily. He called it "inflammable air." We now know this gas is hydrogen. He also studied the air we breathe. He found that air is made of different parts. He found oxygen and nitrogen in the air.

Cavendish was very careful with his tools. He used a special scale to get exact results. He used these tools to study heat. He thought heat came from the motion of tiny parts. He also studied how the Earth works. He did a famous test called the Cavendish experiment. He used large lead balls and a torsion balance. This is a tool that twists to measure small forces. He used it to find the density of the Earth. Density tells us how heavy something is for its size. He found the Earth is 5.48 times denser than water.
