He was born in Boston on February 16, 1838. Adams belonged to one of the most influential political families in the United States. His great-grandfather, John Adams, was a Founding Father and a U.S. President. His grandfather, John Quincy Adams, also served as a U.S. President. His mother, Abigail Brown Adams, came from a wealthy merchant family in Massachusetts. This deep political and social background shaped his view of leadership and government.

After graduating from Harvard College in 1858, Adams traveled through Europe. He attended lectures on civil law at the University of Berlin. In 1861, his father, Charles Francis Adams Sr., became the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Henry moved to London to serve as his father's private secretary.

During this period, he also acted as an anonymous correspondent for The New York Times. He monitored diplomatic tensions and the activities of Confederate commerce raiders. This time in London introduced him to important thinkers like John Stuart Mill.

Adams was deeply influenced by Mill's ideas on representative government. Mill argued that an intelligent and moral elite was necessary to guide a democracy. He believed this was needed to protect the government from corruption and ignorance. Adams felt that democracy could still reward conscientious public servants. These experiences in London convinced him to pursue a career in journalism. He wanted to use writing to provide the knowledgeable leadership he believed the country needed.

Upon returning to the United States in 1868, Adams settled in Washington, D.C. He worked as a journalist to expose political corruption and defend democratic ideals. In 1870, he became a professor of medieval history at Harvard University. He held this position until his retirement in 1877 at age 39. Adams is credited with conducting the first historical seminar work in the United States. This new method changed how students studied the past through direct research.

As an author, Adams produced several major works that defined his career. He wrote a massive nine-volume series titled The History of the United States of America, 1801–1817. This work focused on the administrations of Jefferson and Madison. It was praised for its literary style and use of documentary evidence. In 1880, he published a popular novel called Democracy. He wrote it anonymously to explore the corruption of political life in Washington. He also wrote a novel named Esther under a different pseudonym.

Adams also became a critic of the rising power of large corporations. While editing the journal North American Review, he published essays about financial malpractice. He observed how centralized finance and monopolies began to dominate American life. He expressed deep disenchantment with the economic and political systems of his time. He believed that the rise of these "corporate organisms" was changing the social fabric. This critical perspective was a central theme in his later observations and writings.

His most enduring achievement was his memoir, The Education of Henry Adams. He published a small private edition in 1907, but it was released to the public after his death in 1918.
