Despite these hurdles, she continued her vital work at the observatory. She was even made head of stellar photometry in 1921.
Henrietta Swan Leavitt died of stomach cancer in 1921 at age 53. Her contributions were so significant that Edwin Hubble suggested she deserved a Nobel Prize. Although the prize is not awarded posthumously, her legacy remains. Today, her name is honored on a crater on the Moon and an asteroid. She remains a central figure in our understanding of the cosmic distance scale.
