Hematology

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hematology is a specialized branch of medicine. It focuses on the study of blood. This field examines the cause of blood diseases. It also looks at their prognosis and treatment. Specialists work to prevent blood-related illnesses. Hematology is a subspecialty of internal medicine. It is separate from medical oncology, though the two fields overlap.

This medical field covers many different body components. It involves the study of blood cells and platelets. Doctors also examine hemoglobin, which is a protein in the blood. They look at blood proteins and bone marrow. The study includes blood vessels and the spleen. Hematologists also examine the mechanism of coagulation. Coagulation is the process that allows blood to clot.

There are several types of specialized medical professionals. Hematologists are physicians who care for patients. They treat many different hematological diseases. Some hematologists work in a laboratory setting. They view blood films under a microscope. They also examine bone marrow slides. Other experts are called hematopathologists. These are pathologists who specialize in diagnosing blood diseases. They often manage hematology laboratories. Hematologists and hematopathologists work together. They combine their skills to find a diagnosis. This teamwork helps them deliver the most appropriate therapy.

Hematologists may choose to focus on specific areas. Some specialize in treating bleeding disorders. Examples include hemophilia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The cause of the latter condition is still unknown. Other doctors focus on hematological malignancies. These are blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. Some also treat multiple myeloma. Another area is the study of hemoglobinopathies. These are disorders involving abnormal hemoglobins. Examples include thalassemia syndromes and hemoglobin S, C, or E.

Other specialists focus on different medical processes. Transfusion medicine is the science of blood transfusion. These experts work in a blood bank. Some doctors focus on bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. They use technology to isolate hematopoietic progenitor cells. These are also called HPCs. This work is vital for many complex patients.

Becoming a hematologist requires extensive training. In the United States, students first complete a four-year medical degree. After that, they enter residency or internship programs. These programs last three to four years. They then spend two to three more years in specialized training. This extra time helps them learn to diagnose and treat blood disorders. Fellowship training often includes exposure to hematopathology. To get a job, doctors must complete a recognized fellowship program.

Hematologists often handle very complex medical cases. They work across different specialties to provide care. This is necessary for patients with complex illnesses like sickle cell disease. They also provide consultation for hospitalized patients. One example is disseminated intravascular coagulation. They also help with cases involving thrombosis. Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots. This multidisciplinary approach ensures patients receive the best care possible.
