People planned the metro for 27 years. It first opened to the public on August 2, 1982. The system has two lines. These lines share much of the same track. Line M1 goes from Kivenlahti to Vuosaari. Line M2 goes from Tapiola to Mellunmäki. The metro carries 92.6 million passengers every year. It helps people travel between the city and Espoo.

Building the metro was a big job. Workers had to dig deep tunnels into the rock. In one spot, they found a wedge of clay. They called this the Kluuvi bruise. To fix it, they used pipes to freeze the clay. They turned it into a giant freezer! Once the clay was frozen, they could safely blast it away. This helped them finish the tunnel. The stations can also act as bomb shelters.
