The infection continues once a person ingests these infective eggs. The eggs enter the gut and develop into larvae within the intestine. These larvae then penetrate a blood vessel to reach the lungs. After 10 to 14 days, they penetrate the alveolar walls of the lungs. The larvae then ascend the bronchial tree to the throat. Finally, they are re-swallowed to return to the small intestine. This complete cycle takes about two to three months to finish.
Helminths enter the body through several different transmission pathways. Many people become infected by ingesting contaminated vegetables or drinking unsafe water. Eating raw or undercooked meat is a major source of tapeworms like *Taenia*. Some worms, such as hookworms, can penetrate the skin directly. Other parasites, like those causing filariasis, are transmitted by mosquitoes. Even certain roundworms can be passed from pets to humans. 
The physical effects of helminthiasis depend on the worm type and the number of parasites. A light burden might cause no symptoms at all. However, heavy infections can be very dangerous. In extreme cases, a large mass of worms can tear the muscular layer of the intestinal wall. This can lead to serious conditions like peritonitis or gangrene. The body also reacts with an immune response. This can cause inflammation in the lungs, liver, or central nervous system. 
Helminthiasis also causes severe secondary health problems like malnutrition and anemia. Worms compete with the host for nutrients, which can lead to stunted growth. Some worms, like *Necator americanus*, feed directly on the host's blood. This can cause severe iron-deficiency anemia. These health issues can lead to poor cognitive development and difficulty concentrating. In children, this often results in lower school performance and higher absenteeism. 
Because these diseases affect so many people, they are considered neglected tropical diseases. Soil-transmitted helminths alone affect as much as a quarter of the world's population. To fight this, the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases was launched in 2012. This project involves pharmaceutical companies and non-governmental organizations. Their goal was to control or eradicate these diseases by 2020. Addressing these infections is a vital part of improving global health and socioeconomic development.
