Mirren's journey into acting began with specific training and early roles. She attended the New College of Speech and Drama in London. This college was located in Ivy House, the former home of the dancer Anna Pavlova. At age eighteen, she passed an audition for the National Youth Theatre. Her performance as Cleopatra in the 1965 production of Antony and Cleopatra launched her career. She later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to perform classic works. During her time with the RSC, she played roles such as Rosalind in As You Like It. She also played Lady Macbeth in 1974. Acting requires a deep connection to truth and emotion. Mirren once criticized the RSC for spending too much on lavish costumes and technicalities. She believed these things could distance an actor from the true imagination of a play.

Her family history is a blend of English and Russian heritage. She was born Ilyena Lydia Mironoff on 26 July 1945 in London. Her mother, Kathleen Rogers, came from a working-class family in West Ham. Her father, Vasily Petrovich Mironoff, belonged to an exiled family of Russian nobility. His family had owned a large estate near Gzhatsk in the Russian Empire. The Russian Revolution in 1917 changed his family's life forever. His father, Pyotr, was a diplomat in Britain when the revolution occurred. The family became stranded in England and eventually settled in London. Vasily worked as a musician with the London Philharmonic Orchestra before the war. He later became a cab driver and a civil servant. In 1951, the family changed their surname to Mirren by deed poll.

Mirren has achieved great success in film, specifically through historical portrayals.
