She is best known as the creator of the fictional character Bridget Jones. Fielding uses her writing to explore human experiences and social observations. Her work often focuses on the gap between public expectations and private realities. This theme has made her stories deeply relatable to readers worldwide. Through books, newspaper columns, and film scripts, she has shaped modern popular culture.

Fielding’s creative process often involves transforming real-world observations into fiction.

Her early career involved serious journalism and documentary work. In 1985, she produced a live satellite broadcast from a refugee camp in Eastern Sudan. She also worked on documentaries for the charity Comic Relief. In 1989, she researched a series titled "Where Hunger is a Weapon" about the Southern Sudan rebel war. These intense experiences provided the foundation for her first novel, Cause Celeb, published in 1994. This book was a satire regarding the relationship between celebrities and refugees.

The creation of Bridget Jones followed a unique and unexpected path.

While working on a novel about the Caribbean, Fielding was approached by The Independent newspaper. The paper wanted her to write a column about single life in London. Fielding felt this was too personal and embarrassing to write as herself. Instead, she proposed creating an imaginary, exaggerated, and ironically comic character. She wrote these columns anonymously to maintain honesty about the preoccupations of single women in their thirties.

This character eventually grew into a massive literary and cinematic franchise.

The first novel, Bridget Jones's Diary, was published in 1996. While the hardback had modest sales, the 1997 paperback became a global phenomenon. It remained at the top of the bestseller charts for over six months. Fielding continued the series with novels such as The Edge of Reason and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The latter was published in 2013 and debuted at number one on The Sunday Times bestseller list. By June 2014, its UK paperback sales had reached one million copies.

Bridget Jones has also achieved significant success in the film industry.

There are four movies chronicling the character's adventures. These include Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and Bridget Jones's Baby. Fielding was part of the screenwriting team for all four films. These movies have been highly successful at the box office. Collectively, the films have earned over three quarters of a billion dollars. This commercial success demonstrates the enduring appeal of Fielding's character.

Fielding's influence on British culture is well-documented through various polls and honors.

In 2004, a BBC poll named her the 29th most influential person in British culture. In 2016, the BBC's Woman's Hour identified Bridget Jones as one of seven women who most influenced British female culture over seven decades. Bridget was the only fictional woman included on that list. Fielding has received numerous awards for her writing. She won the British Book of the Year in 1997 and the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize in 2017. She also received an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University of York.

Beyond her professional writing, Fielding is committed to philanthropic efforts. She serves as an Ambassador for Save the Children and the Yorkshire Children's Charity. Her work with the latter focuses on alleviating child poverty in her native Yorkshire. She also supports Ohana One, which uses remote technology to perform surgeries in Africa. In 2009, she published a collection of short stories called OxTales to aid Oxfam. Her diverse career connects literature, media, and social advocacy in a meaningful way.
