Heinz Rühmann was a legendary German film actor of the 20th century. He appeared in over 100 films between 1926 and 1993. People often call him a German film legend. He was famous for playing ordinary citizens in comedies. He also became a respected character actor in his later years. A character actor is someone who plays complex or specific roles.

His career followed several distinct stages. He began acting in various German theaters during the early 1920s. He achieved film stardom in 1930 with the movie *Die Drei von der Tankstelle* (*The Three from the Filling Station*). Throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, he was a popular comedic actor and singer. Later, he moved into more serious roles. He even worked as a director behind the camera. In 1942, he was seen working as a cameraman.

During the Nazi period from 1933 to 1945, Rühmann's life was complicated. He acted in 37 films and directed four during this time. He tried to remain as neutral as possible in the press. He did not speak for or against the Nazi government. He was a supporter of democracy, yet he remained a star under the regime. Some people accused him of being an opportunist to save his career. Others believe his divorce from his Jewish wife, Maria Herbot, was meant to protect her. Herbot later defended him against these accusations.

His status during the war was unique. As a *Staatsschauspieler*, or state actor, he held the highest title for an actor. This status meant he was not drafted into the *Wehrmacht*, the German military. He did complete basic training as a reserve military pilot because he was a hobbyist pilot. In August 1944, Joseph Goebbels placed him on the *Gottbegnadeten* list. This was a list of indispensable actors. He was also a favorite of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. Interestingly, he was also a favorite of Anne Frank. She kept his picture on her wall in her hiding place.

After 1945, Rühmann had to rebuild his career in West Germany. By the mid-1950s, he was a leading character actor. In 1956, he starred in *Der Hauptmann von Köpenick* (*The Captain of Köpenick*). This film was based on the true story of Wilhelm Voigt. Voigt was a Prussian cobbler who dressed as an officer to take over a town hall. Rühmann also played famous fictional detectives like Father Brown and Inspector Maigret. In 1965, he worked in Hollywood in the movie *Ship of Fools*.

His life was marked by many prestigious awards. He won twelve Bambi Awards during his career. In 1957, he received the Golden Gate Award for his performance in *The Captain of Köpenick*. He also received the *Großes Verdienstkreuz* (Grand Cross of the Order of Merit) from the Federal Republic of Germany. He was awarded this honor several times, including in 1965, 1972, and 1977. In 1995, he was posthumously named the "Greatest German Actor of the Century" by the *Goldene Kamera* awards.

Even after his death, his popularity remains high. In 2006, a poll in the TV show *Unsere Besten* voted him the number one favorite German actor. He lived to the age of 92. He died in October 1994 and was buried in Berg-Aufkirchen, Bavaria. His long career connects the history of early German cinema to the modern era. He remains a central figure in the study of 20th-century German culture.
