Hector Guimard was a prominent French architect and designer. He is best known for championing the Art Nouveau style. This movement focuses on organic, flowing lines inspired by nature. Guimard wanted to integrate art into every part of daily life. He designed everything from massive apartment buildings to small door handles. His work transformed the visual landscape of Paris and beyond.

Guimard used a specific variety of materials to achieve his organic look. He frequently combined cast iron with glass and colorful ceramics. For the Castel Béranger, he created a lobby that resembled an undersea grotto. He used sinuous, vine-like cast iron for decoration. He even designed the wallpaper, rain spouts, and door handles. This approach ensured that every detail followed his artistic vision.

His career began with formal training in France. He enrolled in the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 1882. Later, he studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts. Guimard also taught drawing and perspective to students for many years. In 1895, he traveled through England, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In Brussels, he met the architect Victor Horta. Horta was a founder of Art Nouveau. Seeing Horta's Hôtel Tassel changed Guimard's style toward sinuous, vegetal lines.

Guimard's first major success was the Castel Béranger. This apartment building contains 36 units in Paris. He completed it between 1895 and 1898 when he was 30 years old. He persuaded the client to choose a modern style over a restrained one. The building won a competition for the best new facade in 1899. Guimard used this success to advertise his work effectively. He even wrote a monograph about the building to promote his talent.

He also designed many unique residential houses. The Maison Coilliot in Lille features a facade of green enamelled volcanic rock. It uses soaring arches and asymmetric, organic doorways. Guimard also built Castel Henriette in Sèvres. This house featured a tall, slender watchtower and custom furniture. The building had an unhappy history when lightning struck the tower in 1903. Despite these challenges, his residential work showed his incredible versatility.

Perhaps his most famous work involves the Paris Métro. The transit system planned to open in 1900 for the Universal Exposition. Guimard designed edicules, which are ornamental glass and iron canopies. He created two main designs called Type A and Type B. Type A was more cubic and simple. Type B was rounded and dynamic, resembling a dragonfly. He also designed green-painted iron balustrades with abstract vegetal forms.

These subway entrances were initially quite controversial. Some critics felt they did not match the older architecture of Paris. In 1904, authorities even removed a Guimard entrance at the Opéra station. Between 1900 and 1913, 167 of these entrances were installed. Today, 88 of these original designs still survive in various locations. They remain a vital part of the Parisian identity.

Guimard's legacy faced a difficult period in the 20th century. Art Nouveau went out of fashion during the 1910s. By the 1960s, many of his buildings had been demolished. However, his reputation revived during that same decade. Art historians began to recognize his originality and importance. Museums like the Museum of Modern Art now acquire his works. His contribution to architecture and decorative arts is now widely celebrated.
