These places can be very different. Some are small, like a doctor's office or a clinic. Others are large, like a hospital. Hospitals often have beds for people to stay in overnight. They have special rooms for emergencies, too.

Other places help in different ways. Pharmacies sell medicines and medical goods. Medical laboratories test samples to learn about a person's health. Some labs are inside hospitals. Other labs are private and serve the community. There are also research facilities. These places study how to make new treatments.

In Australia, the government looks at how much work a facility does. They use a way to measure this called a SWPE. This stands for standard whole patient equivalent. It helps them decide how much money to give a facility. They look at the patients who visit. They also look at the age and gender of patients. This is because different people need different types of care. For example, babies and older people may need more help than young men.
