Long ago, movies had very strict rules.

These rules were called the Hays Code. People called it this after Will H. Hays. He was a leader for the film studios. In the 1920s, some movie stars were in big trouble. Many people felt that movies were not good enough. Some states even made their own laws to stop films.

To stop this, the studios made their own rules. They wanted to decide what was okay to show.

The Code had two main parts. One part said movies should not lower moral standards. It wanted to show the correct way to live. The second part was a list of things to avoid. For example, movies could not show certain bad words. They also could not show people breaking the law without punishment.

The rules said that good must always win over evil. This meant that bad people in movies had to pay for their crimes. This system lasted for many years. In 1968, the rules changed. A new rating system was made for films instead.
