People use them for protection against weather conditions like sun or rain. They are also used for ceremonial reasons, such as university graduation. Some hats serve religious purposes, while others are used for safety or as fashion accessories. Hats that include mechanical features like visors, spikes, or flaps are often called headgear.

Throughout history, hats have served as important indicators of social status and identity.

Most hats are constructed using several distinct parts. The crown is the top section of the hat.

Below the crown is the brim, which is a projecting rim. Some designs also include a hatband wrapped around the crown just above the brim.

Some headgear is even more complex, featuring specialized additions like braces or beer holders.

Hats can be categorized by their specific functions and styles. Protective hats include the hard hat for construction workers and the ushanka, a fur hat with earflaps for warmth.

Religious adherents also use specific headwear, such as the turban worn by Sikhs or church hats worn by Christian women during worship.

The history of headwear stretches back tens of thousands of years. The 27,000-to-30,000-year-old Venus of Willendorf figurine may depict a woman in a woven hat.
