Hasegawa Tōhaku was a famous painter from Japan. He was born into a family that dyed cloth. He grew up to be a great artist. He studied how to paint with black ink.

Some painters used bright gold to show wealth. Tōhaku chose a different way. He liked to make art that was quiet. He painted simple things like pine trees.

He made large folding screens with his art. Some of these are called national treasures. This means they are very special to Japan.

He even worked for a powerful leader. He painted on walls and sliding doors. His son also helped him paint.

Many people still look at his work today. His art shows us a calm world.
