He was the second-oldest of the Marx Brothers. While his brothers Groucho and Chico used words for comedy, Harpo used his body and face. He relied on visual comedy like pantomime and clowning. In his movies, he famously never spoke a single word. Instead, he used a horn or whistling to communicate with others.

He often wore a curly, reddish-blonde wig to complete his look.

Harpo was known for amazing tricks called sight gags. He wore a large topcoat with very deep pockets. He could pull almost anything out of them to surprise people. In the film Horse Feathers, he pulled out a lit candle that was burning at both ends. He also pulled a steaming cup of coffee out of his coat.

He even used a sword and a fish to give a secret password. To show his feelings, he used many funny facial expressions. One special face was called "the Gookie," which he copied from a man who rolled cigars.

Harpo's musical journey was very unique and self-taught. He learned to play the harp by looking at a picture of an angel.

He did not have formal lessons at first. He tuned the instrument himself by starting with just one note. Because of this, he developed a special way of playing. Even when he worked with professional teachers, he kept his own style. He never learned to read or write music, but he played beautifully. He performed famous songs like "Alone" on the harp during his movies.

His life began in Manhattan, New York City, on November 23, 1888.

He grew up in a neighborhood filled with many immigrants. His father was a tailor from Alsace, and his mother was from Germany. As a child, Harpo had to work many odd jobs. He sold newspapers and worked in a butcher shop to help his family. He even played the piano to accompany silent films with his brother Chico. By 1911, he had changed his name from Adolph to Arthur.

Harpo's fame reached far beyond the United States. In 1933, he traveled to the Soviet Union for a six-week tour.

While there, he acted as a goodwill ambassador. He even helped deliver secret messages by taping them to his leg. His talent was so well-known that he was drawn in cartoons. Disney featured him in a cartoon called Mickey's Polo Team. He was also a character in a Popeye cartoon. Harpo passed away in 1964, leaving behind a great musical legacy.
