Harmonic mean

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Math helps us find an average. An average is a single number that shows a middle value. One special kind is the harmonic mean.

You can use it for rates like speed. Imagine you drive to a shop at 60 km/h. Then you drive back at 20 km/h. To find the true average speed, you need the harmonic mean. The answer is 30 km/h. If you used a regular average, you would get 40 km/h. That number would be too big.

This math works in many places. It helps scientists study electricity. It also works with light and lenses. In geometry, it helps us find lengths in shapes. For example, it can help solve the crossed ladders problem.

This image shows how to find the mean using a graph. The harmonic mean is often smaller than other types of averages. It is the smallest of the three Pythagorean means. This happens if the numbers in your set are not all the same.
