In 1820, Ørsted published his most famous discovery. He observed that a compass needle would deflect when placed near an electric current. This proved a direct relationship between electricity and magnetism. Some people claim he found this by accident during a lecture. However, this is actually a myth. Ørsted had been searching for this connection since 1818. He was initially confused by his results. He first thought magnetic effects radiated from all sides of a wire, like heat or light. After three months of intense investigation, he realized the truth. He showed that an electric current produces a circular magnetic field. Later, his friend Friedrich Wöhler took over the research. Wöhler produced aluminium powder using his own design. In 1845, he finally isolated enough solid metal to describe its properties. Ørsted was also a very active community builder. He founded the Society for the Dissemination of Natural Science in 1824. He also helped found organizations that became the Danish Meteorological Institute. In 1829, he established the College of Advanced Technology. This school eventually became the Technical University of Denmark. His leadership helped build modern scientific programs and laboratories at the University of Copenhagen.

Today, Ørsted's legacy is visible everywhere. The unit of magnetic induction is named the oersted in his honor. In Denmark, a major energy company changed its name to Ørsted. This change signaled a move toward offshore windfarms. His name is also on many buildings and parks. A statue of him stands in Copenhagen and another in Oxford.
