Hammer throw

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The hammer throw is a fun track and field event. It is one of four main throwing sports. In this sport, athletes throw a heavy metal ball. This ball is attached to a steel wire and a grip. The ball, wire, and grip can all move on their own. Men use a 7.26 kg hammer. Women use a 4 kg hammer. The wire must not be longer than 1.22 meters.

This sport has a very long history. It may go back to Ireland in 1830 BC. Long ago, people used rocks and wooden handles. In Scotland, people used heavy sledgehammers. Today, the men's event is in the Olympics. The women's event joined the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney.

To throw far, athletes must use skill. They stand in a throwing circle. They swing the hammer back and forth first. Then, they spin in a circle. They make three, four, or five full turns. They must stay inside the circle until the ball lands. A tall cage sits around the circle for safety. This cage keeps the heavy ball from flying the wrong way.
