The island was shaped by powerful movements in the Earth. The movement of the Australian continent and the Pacific Plate created this island arc. This movement caused the land to rise up. Because of this, Halmahera has many volcanoes. Dukono is an active volcano at the north end. Mount Ibu is another active volcano on the northwest coast.

History has many layers on this island. Long ago, the Sultanate of Jailolo was one of four important kingdoms in Maluku. The Loloda Kingdom was also a kingdom in the north during the 13th century. During World War II, the Japanese used Kao Bay as a naval base. Later, in 1999 and 2000, there was a period of religious fighting. Thousands of people were killed during these conflicts. In June 2000, a ferry with refugees sank near Sulawesi. A memorial for this event is in Duma village.

Nature lovers find many wonders on Halmahera. Some living things are endemic, which means they live only here. The standardwing bird of paradise is one such bird.

A palm tree called Jailoloa halmaherensis was also recently discovered. The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace visited this area in the 1800s. He thought the standardwing bird was his greatest prize. While visiting, he came up with the idea of natural selection. He wrote these ideas in a letter to Charles Darwin.

Today, the island is changing because of mining. Large projects mine nickel and cobalt in North and Central Halmahera. This metal is very important for making batteries for electric cars. The Indonesian government now requires the ore to be processed on the island. Many power plants have been built to help with this. The town of Tobelo is also growing very fast. It is becoming a busy center for travel and trade.

Halmahera is a massive island located within the Maluku Islands of Indonesia.

It is part of the North Maluku province. Halmahera is the largest island in Indonesia outside of the five main islands. The provincial capital, Sofifi, sits on the west coast of the island. The island's population has grown significantly over recent decades. In 1995, the population was 162,728 people. By 2010, the island itself had 449,938 residents. If you include the surrounding island group, the number reaches 667,161. This group includes South Halmahera and Tidore, but not Ternate.

The geology of Halmahera is shaped by intense tectonic activity. The island lies on an island arc that includes the Raja Ampat Islands. This land was uplifted by the northward migration of the Australian continent. At the same time, the Pacific Plate underwent subduction, which is when one plate slides under another. This process created a volcanic landscape. Dukono is an active volcano located at the northern end of the island. Mount Ibu is another active volcano found on the northwest coast.

Human history on Halmahera is deeply connected to nearby islands. For a long time, the island's fortunes were tied to Ternate and Tidore. Before the Dutch East India Company colonized the area, Halmahera was home to the Sultanate of Jailolo. This was one of the four major kingdoms of Maluku. In the north, the Loloda Kingdom was also a prominent power during the 13th century. During World War II, the island served a military purpose. The Japanese established a naval base at Kao Bay.

Recent history has also seen periods of intense hardship. In 1999 and 2000, the region experienced the Maluku sectarian conflict. This began as an ethnic dispute between the Christian Kao district and the Muslim Malifut district. It eventually spread and took on a religious nature. Thousands of people died during the fighting between religious militias. In June 2000, a tragic accident occurred when a ferry sank. The vessel was carrying refugees from the fighting near the northeast tip of Sulawesi. About five hundred people died in the sinking. A memorial to this tragedy exists in Duma village.

The island is home to diverse groups of people and unique wildlife. The coastal areas are inhabited by the Tobelo people. They are also known as the O'Hoberera Manyawa, meaning "people that live outside of the forest." In the interior, the Togutil people live a semi-nomadic life. They are known as the O'Hongana Manyawa, or "people that live inside of the forest." Between 300 and 500 people live in isolation within the Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park.

Halmahera is a place of incredible biological discovery. Many species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth. The standardwing bird of paradise, or Semioptera wallacii, is a famous example.

A recently discovered palm tree, Jailoloa halmaherensis, is also endemic to the island. The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace visited the area in the 1860s. He considered the standardwing bird of paradise to be his greatest prize. While visiting the region, Wallace developed the idea of natural selection. He wrote about this concept in a letter to Charles Darwin.

Today, the island's economy is changing due to industrial mining. Massive projects are extracting nickel and cobalt from the earth. These metals are essential for producing batteries for electric cars. The PT Weda Bay Nickel project is one of the largest nickel operations in the world. It operates within the Weda Bay Industrial Park in North and Central Halmahera. Since 2022, the Indonesian government has prohibited the export of unprocessed nickel ore. This means the ore must be processed on the island first. To support this, eleven power plants have already been built. The town of Tobelo is also seeing rapid development. It is growing quickly and aims to rival the historical dominance of Ternate.
