Everything in our world is made of tiny bits. One type of bit is called a hadron.

Hadrons are made of even smaller parts called quarks. A strong force holds these quarks together. This force is called the strong nuclear force.

Hadrons come in two main families. The first family is called baryons. Most baryons have three quarks. Protons and neutrons are two examples. They make up most of the mass in an atom. The second family is called mesons. Mesons have an even number of quarks. Most mesons have two quarks. A pion is an example of a meson.

Scientists also found exotic types. These are called tetraquarks and pentaquarks. They have four or five quarks. Most hadrons are unstable. This means they fall apart quickly. They decay into other particles. Protons are a special case. They seem to stay stable for a very long time. Scientists study hadrons by crashing them into each other. This helps them see the tiny parts inside.
