Some animals, like certain amphipods, grow to huge sizes. Other small creatures, like copepods, stay very tiny.

The Danish Galathea II and the Soviet Vityaz expeditions noticed a shift in lifeforms. They found that life changed significantly at great depths. In 1956, Anton Frederik Bruun proposed the term "hadal." He named it after Hades, the ancient Greek god of the underworld. He originally used 6,000 meters as the boundary. Today, UNESCO suggests a middle limit of 6,500 meters to represent the transition.
Many different types of animals inhabit these trenches. As of 2020, researchers have identified over 400 species in hadal ecosystems. This includes a variety of fish like snailfish, eelpouts, and cusk-eels. Some invertebrates can live even deeper than fish. For example, certain amphipods and sea cucumbers exist at depths exceeding 10,000 meters. Giant protists called Xenophyophora also live in these depths. While many species are unique to a single trench, some animals are eurybathic. This means they have evolved to live across a wide range of depths. This allows them to move between the abyssal and hadal zones.
Exploring the hadal zone is a massive technical challenge. Machines must be built to withstand thousands of atmospheres of pressure. If a machine is not strong enough, it can implode. For instance, the unmanned submersible Nereus imploded in 2014 at 9,990 meters.
Humanity has made several historic trips to the deepest points. In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the Challenger Deep. This is the deepest known part of the ocean in the Mariana Trench. They used a specialized craft called the Bathyscaphe Trieste. In 2012, James Cameron performed the deepest solo dive using the Deepsea Challenger. He reached a depth of nearly 10,900 meters. Later, the Chinese submersible Jiaolong reached depths of 7,000 meters. These missions help us understand how life survives in the most isolated places on our planet.
