People cause much of this loss. They clear forests to make farms. They build large cities. They also dig for things in the ground.
Nature can change things too. Fires and big changes in weather can destroy homes. Some parts of the ocean are also in danger.
All living things need a home to survive. This home is called a habitat. Habitat destruction happens when a home changes too much. The land can no longer support the plants and animals. Some animals move away to find new homes. Others may die. This leads to a loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity means the variety of life in an area.
Humans cause much of this loss. People clear forests to make room for farms. This is called agricultural expansion. People also build cities and roads. They might dig for minerals or cut down trees. In the Amazon, many forests are lost this way.
Nature can also change habitats. Volcanoes, fires, and climate change can destroy homes. Even the ocean faces trouble. Overfishing and pollution hurt coral reefs.
Every living thing needs a home to survive. This home is called a habitat. Habitat destruction happens when a natural area changes so much that it cannot support its native species. When this occurs, the living things that once lived there must move or they might die. This leads to a loss of biodiversity, which is the variety of life in an area.
There are many ways a habitat can be destroyed. Humans often change land to use natural resources. We use land for farming, making products in factories, or building big cities. This is often called urban sprawl. Other human activities include mining, cutting down trees, and fishing with large nets called trawling.
Scientists have studied these changes for a long time. They look at the fossil record to see how habitats changed millions of years ago. For example, one study looked at tropical rainforests from 300 million years ago. Back then, breaking up forests led to fewer types of amphibians. At the same time, a drier climate helped more types of reptiles grow. 
Many places on Earth are in great danger right now. These areas are called biodiversity hotspots. They are often in tropical regions and hold many unique species. In the past, much of the habitat on islands like Japan and Madagascar was lost. Tropical rainforests are also shrinking fast. Originally, there were about 16 million square kilometers of rainforest. Now, less than 9 million square kilometers remain. We lose about 160,000 square kilometers of forest every single year. This means we lose about 1% of the original forest each year.
We can see these changes in many different environments. In the United States, more than half of all wetlands have been destroyed in the last 200 years. In the ocean, one-fifth of all coral reefs have been destroyed.
Habitat destruction occurs when a natural environment can no longer support its native species. When a habitat is destroyed, the organisms living there must either migrate to new areas or they will die. This process leads to a significant decrease in biodiversity, which is the variety of life in a specific region. Habitat destruction is currently the primary driver of species extinction and biodiversity loss across the entire globe.
Destruction often begins with habitat fragmentation. This happens when a large, continuous habitat is broken into smaller, isolated patches. Fragmentation can lead to habitat collapse even if the land is not completely removed. Humans drive much of this change through the use of natural resources. Activities like agriculture, industrial production, and urbanization, also known as urban sprawl, transform the landscape. Other significant human activities include mining, logging, and ocean trawling.
Environmental factors can also cause habitat loss through more indirect processes. Natural events like volcanism, wildfires, and climate change are documented in the fossil record. For instance, 300 million years ago in Euramerica, the fragmentation of tropical rainforests caused a loss in amphibian diversity. During that same period, a drier climate actually encouraged a burst of diversity among reptiles. On a cosmic scale, gamma ray bursts could potentially destroy habitats by depleting a planet's ozone layer.
Different ecosystems experience destruction in unique ways. Tropical rainforests are a major focus of study because they are shrinking rapidly. Originally, there were approximately 16 million square kilometers of tropical rainforest worldwide. Today, less than 9 million square kilometers remain. The current rate of deforestation is about 160,000 square kilometers every year. This means the world loses roughly 1% of its original forest habitat annually.
Other ecosystems face equally severe threats. Temperate broadleaf forests have been disturbed by farming and logging in at least 94% of their area. Some old-growth forest stands have lost more than 98% of their original size. In North America, less than 3% of the original tallgrass prairie remains because it was converted to farmland. Wetlands are also highly vulnerable; in the United States, more than 50% of wetlands were destroyed in the last 200 years. In Europe, between 60% and 70% of wetlands have been completely lost.
Marine environments are also suffering from heavy degradation. About 20% of all coral reefs have been destroyed, and another 20% are severely degraded. This degradation is caused by overfishing, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. In the Philippines, 90% of coral reefs have already been destroyed. Coastal areas also face pressure from human development. In the United Kingdom, rising sea levels and temperatures have caused soil erosion and loss of quality in marine ecosystems.
Researchers use various drivers to explain why humans destroy habitats. These drivers are categorized into demographic, economic, sociopolitical, scientific, and cultural factors. A study of 152 cases showed that economic factors were the most significant, affecting 81% of the cases. These included the growth of timber markets and the rising prices of cash crops. Institutional or policy factors, such as land-tenure insecurity and corruption, played a role in 78% of cases. Demographic drivers, such as an expanding human population, also contribute heavily. 
Agriculture is the most significant direct cause of forest loss. In a study of tropical deforestation, agricultural expansion was a major factor in 96% of the cases. This includes activities like cattle ranching, permanent cultivation, and shifting cultivation, also known as slash-and-burn. Infrastructure expansion and wood extraction are also primary proximate causes. As human populations grow, especially in biodiversity hotspots, the need for land often conflicts with conservation efforts. This makes protecting the remaining natural habitats a global priority.
