Guy Damien Lafleur was a legendary Canadian professional ice hockey player.
He is remembered as one of the most dynamic forces in the National Hockey League (NHL). Known by the nicknames "the Flower" and "le Démon Blond" (the Blond Demon), he brought a unique artistry to the sport. Lafleur was a master of scoring and skating. He was the first player in NHL history to achieve two remarkable milestones. He scored 50 goals in six consecutive seasons. He also recorded 100 points in those same six consecutive seasons. These feats cemented his status as a premier offensive talent.
Lafleur's playing style was described as a masterpiece of movement. One sports columnist compared his performance to a Jackson Pollock painting on ice. This meant he was a frenetic innovator who pushed the boundaries of the game. He possessed a trademark smooth skating style and a precise scoring touch. Fans were so captivated by his skill that they would chant "Guy, Guy, Guy!" whenever he touched the puck. Despite his offensive focus, he remained composed under pressure. Even when opposing players used tactics like hooking or slashing, Lafleur never retaliated.
His professional career spanned 17 seasons between 1971 and 1991. He played the right wing position for three different teams. He began his NHL journey with the Montreal Canadiens. Later, he played for the New York Rangers and the Quebec Nordiques. During his time with the Canadiens, he was a central part of a great dynasty. He helped the team win five Stanley Cup championships. These victories occurred in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. He was even named the playoff MVP in 1977.
Lafleur's journey to the NHL began with significant preparation and talent. He was born on September 20, 1951, in Thurso, Quebec. He received his first hockey stick as a Christmas gift when he was five years old. As a youth, he set a tournament record with 64 points at the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. In his teens, he played for the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He led that team to a Memorial Cup victory in 1971. During that season, he scored 130 regular season goals. A broadcaster even called him "Le Turbo de Thurso."
Getting to the NHL required a strategic move by the Montreal Canadiens. In the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, the Canadiens' general manager, Sam Pollock, wanted a top pick. He successfully traded for the first overall selection. Pollock had to choose between two top prospects: Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne. He chose Lafleur, who joined the Canadiens and wore the number 10. This number was chosen after legendary player Jean Béliveau encouraged him to make his own identity. While he struggled initially in his rookie year, he soon became a superstar.
Lafleur's career faced challenges during the 1980s. After the Canadiens' dynasty ended, his production dropped due to injuries. In 1981, he survived a serious car accident where a metal post narrowly missed his head. He also faced a difficult transition when his former teammate, Jacques Lemaire, became his coach. Lemaire emphasized defensive play, while Lafleur remained an offensive-minded player. This created a rift that eventually led to Lafleur's first retirement in 1985. However, he reached a major milestone on December 20, 1983, when he scored his 500th career goal. He was only the tenth player in NHL history to reach this mark.
Lafleur eventually made a surprising return to professional hockey. After being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, he came out of retirement. He played three more seasons from 1988 to 1991. He played for the New York Rangers and the Quebec Nordiques. During this time, he was one of the few players who did not wear a protective helmet. He used a grandfather clause to play without one. Even in his later years, he remained a respected figure. He even mentored emerging stars like Joe Sakic during his time in Quebec.
Beyond the ice, Lafleur led a multifaceted life. He was a licensed helicopter pilot and co-owned a helicopter transportation company. He even released a disco music album in 1979 called "Lafleur!" which featured hockey instructions. He also had a brand of fruit juice energy drink called "Flower Power." His impact on the sport was officially recognized through many honors. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. Finally, he was named to the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2022.
