Gulshan Kumar was a very important man in the Indian music world. He was a producer who helped make many famous songs and films. He started a music company called T-Series in 1983. This company grew into a huge part of the Bollywood industry. It helped the whole music business in India grow very fast. Today, T-Series is still a leader in music. It holds more than 60% of the music market in India.

Kumar's life began in a Punjabi Hindu family in Delhi. His family had moved there after the partition of India in 1947. His father worked as a street vendor selling fruit juice. Gulshan started working with his father when he was young. Later, his family owned a shop that sold records and audio cassettes. This shop helped him learn about the music business. He eventually moved his operations to Noida and then to Mumbai.

He was known for his deep faith and kindness. Kumar was a devoted worshipper of the god Shiva. He loved the Vaishno Devi Temple very much. Because of this, he started a special service in 1983. He offered free meals called prasad to people visiting the temple. This service was located at Baan Ganga. Even after he died in 1997, his son Bhushan Kumar kept the service going.

Kumar produced many movies and hit songs. His first film was Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka in 1989. In 1990, he released the movie Aashiqui, which was a big hit. The music for that film was made by Nadeem–Shravan. He also made films like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin and Bewafa Sanam. T-Series now sells music in 24 different countries. It reaches six different continents around the world.

Sadly, Gulshan Kumar was killed in 1997. He was attacked by a group of men near a temple in Mumbai. This happened on August 12, 1997, while he was returning from prayer. The event was a great shock to the film industry. A man named Abdul Rauf Merchant was later convicted for the crime. Despite this tragedy, the music he started lives on. His family members, like his son and daughters, continue to work in music.
