As rifting progressed, it created connections to the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This flooded the opening basin to create a marginal sea. During the late Jurassic, seafloor spreading began, and oceanic crust formed. This allowed enough circulation with the Atlantic that the deposition of Louann Salt finally ceased.
The floor of the gulf is complex and varies in depth. The basin is divided into several specific regions. These include the Gulf of Mexico basin, which contains the Sigsbee Deep, and the Northeast Gulf of Mexico. Other areas include the South Florida Continental Shelf and Slope, the Campeche Bank, and the Bay of Campeche. The Western, Northwest, and the area near the Mississippi River Delta are also distinct. The seafloor consists of sedimentary rocks and recent sediments. The Sigsbee Deep is the deepest point, reaching 12,467 feet. 
One of the most fascinating features of the seafloor are the brine pools. These are often called brine lakes. They occur in the northern half of the gulf. Brine is produced when gulf water touches Louann Salt along faults or sediments. This is part of a process called salt tectonics. Under pressure, the salt deforms and moves. It can rise to form salt domes or extrude along the Sigsbee Escarpment. These brine pools are extremely salty, often exceeding 200 parts-per-thousand. They are 25% or more denser than the surrounding seawater. This density prevents the brine from mixing, so it gathers in depressions on the gulf floor.
