Coastal cities like Bharuch and Khambhat served as vital trading hubs. These ports connected the Indian Ocean to many different civilizations.
Today, Gujarat is one of the most industrialised states in India. It has a very strong economy. The state's gross state domestic product (GSDP) is the fifth-largest in the country. 

There are many unique natural and cultural features in Gujarat. The Gir National Park is a very important site. It is the only place in the world with a wild population of Asiatic lions.
