This led to many more games being made by different studios.

Many different companies helped build the franchise over the years. Activision brought in a studio called Neversoft, which was famous for the Tony Hawk series.

The game uses several techniques to mimic real guitar playing. Players can perform hammer-ons and pull-offs, which are fast finger movements. You can also use a whammy bar to change the pitch of a note. Most titles include a Career mode to play through every song. You can also play alone or with others in competitive or cooperative modes. In 2008, Guitar Hero World Tour expanded the experience.

This version allowed for a full four-player band with vocals and drums.

The series has seen many changes in its music and technology. Early games used cover versions of songs created by WaveGroup Sound. Most recent titles use master recordings or special re-recordings of famous songs. Some games also offer downloadable content, which allows players to add new songs. The series has grown to include twenty-five releases. This includes spin-off series like DJ Hero and Band Hero. These spin-offs focused on different styles, such as turntablism.

The history of the franchise began with a partnership. RedOctane wanted to bring the Japanese arcade game GuitarFreaks to Western markets. They teamed up with Harmonix, a developer of music video games. The first game was created with a US$1 million budget.

The original controllers were designed by several Harmonix members. They were built by the Honeybee Corporation of China. Later, RedOctane began developing its own controllers in-house.

Business changes moved the series through many different studios. In 2006, Activision bought RedOctane for US$100 million. In the same year, MTV Games purchased Harmonix. This meant Harmonix would no longer develop the series. Activision then hired Neversoft, a studio known for the Tony Hawk series.

Other companies like Budcat Creations and Vicarious Visions also helped. They worked on versions for different systems like the Nintendo DS and Wii.

Guitar Hero became a massive cultural phenomenon in North America. It helped make rhythm games very popular. Some people even used these games as tools for medical learning and development. The series was extremely successful in sales. It has sold more than 25 million units worldwide. This resulted in US$2 billion earned at retail. Many journalists even called the first game one of the most influential games of the early 21st century.

As the series grew, its visual style changed to match its music. The original logo had sharp, pointed decorations to reflect heavy metal music.

When the music selection became broader, the look changed too. The design studio Pentagram created a new, smoother logo for Guitar Hero 5. This new typeface was easier to use for other games like Band Hero. This change showed that the series was moving toward many different musical genres.

Despite its success, the series eventually faced a period of decline. Sales for rhythm games fell short of targets by about 50% starting in 2009. This led to a hiatus for the series in 2011. A planned seventh game was even cancelled because it was considered poor quality. Developers tried to make the game more interactive, but it was too difficult. The project used a budget-friendly song list from the 1990s. Eventually, Activision stopped selling downloadable content and shut down several studios.
