Guion Bluford is a famous engineer and pilot. He made history as the first African American to travel into space.

Before he was an astronaut, he served as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. He also studied how things fly. He earned many degrees in aerospace engineering. This type of engineering helps people build machines for flight. He studied at Pennsylvania State University and the Air Force Institute of Technology. His hard work helped him reach the stars.

Bluford worked as a mission specialist on four different Space Shuttle flights.

His first mission was STS-8 on the shuttle Challenger in 1983. During this trip, the crew launched at night. They deployed a satellite from India into space. They also tested a robotic arm called the Canadarm. The crew studied how space flight affects the human body. This mission lasted 145 hours and completed 98 orbits of the Earth.

Bluford's second flight was the STS-61-A mission in 1985. This mission was very special because it had eight crew members.

That was the largest crew to ever fly in space. It was a mission led by Germany. The crew performed 76 different experiments in a laboratory. They studied things like how liquids move and how materials change. This mission completed 111 orbits of the Earth. It lasted for 169 hours before the shuttle landed in California.

He flew two more times on the shuttle Discovery.

In 1991, his crew gathered data about the light and environment in space. They used many different tools like cameras and sensors. In 1992, he flew on his final mission, STS-53. This crew of five people deployed a payload for the Department of Defense.

All together, Bluford spent over 688 hours in space. These missions helped scientists learn much more about our universe.

Today, many people honor the work of Guion Bluford. He is a member of the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. A middle and high school in Maryland is named after him.

Even a building at Penn State carries his name. His life shows how learning and science can lead to amazing discoveries. He has won many awards, including the Ohio Distinguished Service Medal. His story inspires many people to look up at the sky.
