It sits near the Gulf of Guinea, which is how it received its name. To distinguish it from other nearby territories, it is sometimes called Guinea-Conakry after its capital city, Conakry. The country shares borders with several neighbors. Senegal lies to the north, and Mali is to the northeast. To the southeast, Guinea borders the Ivory Coast. Finally, Sierra Leone and Liberia sit to the south.

The geography of Guinea is divided into four distinct regions. Each region offers a different environment and climate. Maritime Guinea sits along the Atlantic coast. The Fouta Djallon, or Middle Guinea, consists of high highlands.

Guinea's history involves many powerful West African empires. Long before European arrival, the land was part of various organized states. The Ghana Empire was one of the earliest to grow through trade. Later, the Mali Empire became a major power in the region.

This empire was led by Mansa, or emperors, such as Kankou Moussa. The Songhai Empire also expanded its power around the year 1460. Eventually, the Wassoulou Empire was led by Samori Touré in the Malinké area.

In the late 19th century, French military forces began to claim the territory. Guinea became a colony known as French Guinea. France established control after defeating the armies of Samori Touré in 1898. The French negotiated the country's modern borders with the British, Portuguese, and Liberians. On October 2, 1958, Guinea achieved independence from France. This happened after a referendum where the people voted for sovereignty. Ahmed Sékou Touré became the first president of the new republic.

Political life in Guinea has been complex since independence. For many years, the country was governed by autocratic rulers. In 1960, the Democratic Party of Guinea became the only legal political party. President Touré held power for 24 years. After his death in 1984, Colonel Lansana Conté took control in a coup. Conté later moved the country toward civilian rule in the 1990s. However, the nation has faced several military coups d'état throughout its history. In 2021, a military faction overthrew President Alpha Condé.

The country has also faced difficult social and human rights challenges. In 2009, a military junta led by Moussa Dadis Camara took power. This period included violent protests where 157 people were killed. The United States government also noted human rights issues in 2011. These included concerns regarding the treatment of women and children by security forces. Despite these hardships, Guinea remains an active member of many international groups. It is a member of the United Nations and the African Union.

Today, Guinea has a population of approximately 14 million people. About 90 percent of the population is Muslim.

French is the official language used in government and schools. However, people also speak over 24 indigenous languages. The largest are Susu, Pular, and Maninka. The economy relies heavily on agriculture and mineral production. Guinea is the world's second-largest producer of bauxite. It also possesses valuable deposits of gold and diamonds.

Economic data shows that many people in Guinea face hardship. A 2018 survey found that 66.2 percent of the population is affected by multidimensional poverty. An additional 16.4 percent of people are considered vulnerable to poverty. This means a large portion of the population lives with limited resources. The country continues to work through these economic and political challenges. Its role in the global mineral market remains very significant.
