Lasso is known for his views as a traditional economic liberal. This means he supports free-market principles and the division of powers. He believes in limiting government reach to protect fundamental rights. His career includes high-level roles in banking, business, and government service.

Lasso's early life was marked by financial challenges in Guayaquil. He was born on November 16, 1955, to Enrique Lasso Alvarado and Nora Mendoza. Growing up in a large family of ten siblings, he worked at age 15. He earned money to pay for his studies at Colegio La Salle High School.

He later studied economics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. While he did not finish his degree, he began a long career in finance. He worked at the Guayaquil Stock Exchange and various financial companies in Quito.

His business career was very successful before he entered national politics. In 1994, he became the CEO of Banco Guayaquil. He led the bank for more than 20 years and remains its largest shareholder through a trust.

He also managed operations for Coca-Cola in the region during the 1990s. One notable achievement was the Bancos del Barrio program. This initiative brought local shopkeepers into the bank's planning and strategy. The Inter-American Development Bank recognized this as a way to increase grassroots banking.

Lasso's political journey involved several attempts to reach the presidency. He served as Governor of Guayas from 1998 to 1999. In 1999, he was the Superminister of the Economy under President Jamil Mahuad.

He also aimed to vaccinate 9 million people against COVID-19. To fund these efforts, he proposed tax increases on the wealthy. He also worked to eliminate sales taxes for micro-enterprises. However, these economic policies contributed to rising food and fuel prices. This led to widespread protests across Ecuador.

His administration faced significant political and social tension. During the protests, security forces responded to indigenous groups. This led to concerns regarding human rights and the use of force against journalists.
