He threw his sword into the water as a pledge. Then, he cut a rope to help his troops enter the city.

He stayed hidden until the independence movement grew strong again in 1821.

After the war, Mexico changed how it was ruled. At first, Mexico became an empire under Agustín de Iturbide. Victoria did not agree with how Iturbide ruled. He wanted a republic, which is a different kind of government. After Iturbide was sent away, the Constitution of 1824 was made. This new law led to the election of Victoria as president.

He was born José Miguel Ramón Adaucto Fernández y Félix on September 29, 1786, in Tamazula, Nueva Vizcaya. After his parents died during his childhood, he lived with his uncle, a priest. To afford food, he made copies of Latin grammar texts to sell to other students. He eventually moved to Mexico City to study at the College of San Ildefonso. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in April 1811 under a strict, militarized colonial atmosphere.

When the fight for independence began, Victoria turned to military service.

In 1812, he joined the insurgent forces led by José María Morelos. He participated in several major engagements, including the Siege of Cuautla and the assault on Oaxaca. During the battle in Oaxaca, Victoria showed immense bravery at the Juego de Pelota. He famously threw his sword across a moat, declaring it a pledge, before swimming across to cut a bridge rope. This action allowed his troops to enter the city and gave the movement a major victory.

However, the war brought periods of extreme hardship and isolation.

Victoria commanded troops in the Veracruz region, using guerrilla warfare to control the strategic Puente del Rey. He managed to hold several ports and towns, such as Boquilla de Piedras, for a time. By 1817, a strong Spanish offensive and a lack of equipment forced him to retreat. His troops deserted him, leaving him to hide in the jungles of Veracruz for nearly four years. During this time, he survived on herbs, fruits, and animals while developing epilepsy.

Independence was finally achieved through new political alliances.

In 1821, the Plan of Iguala was proclaimed by Agustín de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero. Victoria joined this movement and helped re-capture Veracruz. Although the Army of the Three Guarantees entered Mexico City in September 1821, political tension remained. Victoria wanted a republic, but Iturbide established the First Mexican Empire. When Iturbide suspended congress, Victoria joined a revolt led by Antonio López de Santa Anna. This led to the exile of Iturbide in 1823 and the creation of a new government.

In 1824, the new Constitution of 1824 was ratified by congress.

After his presidency, he peacefully passed power to Vicente Guerrero in 1829. He later served as a senator for Durango and Veracruz, as well as the Governor of Puebla. He even served as the president of the senate and helped negotiate the end of the Pastry War with France in 1838. He died in 1843 at the age of 56 while receiving medical treatment in Perote. Today, his legacy is honored through many cities, schools, and airports named in his honor.
