Long ago, the city began as a Russian fort. It was built in 1818. The name Grozny means "fearsome" in Russian. This name came from the fort's early history. Later, the city grew because of oil. People found oil in the ground nearby. This led to many new jobs. Famous names like Alfred Nobel helped build the oil industry.

The city has seen many changes. In 1944, many Chechen people were forced to leave. They were sent far away to Siberia. Later, they were allowed to return to their homes. During the Soviet era, the city grew with big buildings. It became a major center for oil and industry.
