Words change over time. Long ago, sounds moved in a special way. This helped make new ways to talk.

Jacob Grimm found a rule for these sounds. He saw how sounds shift in a chain. One sound moves to fill a gap. This makes new words.

Some sounds change from hard to soft. For example, the word for 'ten' changed. The old sound became a new one. This is how English grew.

Other sounds changed too. The word for 'foot' changed its start. The word for 'dog' changed its sound. These changes were not accidents.

It is like a big puzzle. We can see how words are kin. It helps us learn about the past.
