Grigori Perelman is a famous mathematician. He was born in 1966 in Russia. He showed great talent for math as a child. At age ten, he joined a special math program. In 1982, he won a gold medal in a math contest. He even earned a perfect score!

Grigori solved very hard puzzles about shapes. One puzzle is called the Poincaré conjecture. It was a mystery for one hundred years. He also proved the Thurston geometrization conjecture. To do this, he used a way called Ricci flow. This method helps study how shapes change.

Grigori did not want to be famous. He turned down the Fields Medal. He also said no to a prize of one million dollars. He said he did not want to be on display like an animal in a zoo. He felt the math world was not fair. Now, he lives a very quiet life in Saint Petersburg.
